Royal Jordanian implements new cargo IT platform

Royal Jordanian started implementing the new cargo IT platform of CHAMP Cargosystems- Cargospot, starting 01-Apr. Thus the airline completed the second phase of the system's cut-over, with the first phase being the cargo handling mode at the cargo terminal, which has been operational since early Jan-2009 for all carriers that RJ handles at Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA).

The second phase includes the replacement of the previously used in-house solution "CHARMS" with the best-in-class IT solution- Cargospot- that covers all aspects of air cargo sales, reservations, pricing, management information and cargo handling.

With Cargospot, an end-to-end air cargo system developed in Switzerland and used by more than 80 international companies, airline clients and their logistics partners are now able to fully benefit from all standard industry interfaces to finally do “e-business” with Royal Jordanian.

Implementing the system allows the airline to prepare RJ for the planned implementation of the IATA e-freight program in Jordan from 2010 onward, a milestone in bringing the air cargo industry towards new levels of efficiency.

With the introduction of Cargospot RJ has realized a much improved interface to Jordanian Customs Authorities, mandating all carriers transporting cargo into Jordan to send shipment information via Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) before the shipment arrives at Queen Alia International Airport, thus facilitating clearance and delivery of the cargo.

Among the other privileges of the system is achieving new quality levels in handling by adding bar-code scanning to the system this year, which will increase efficiency and accuracy.

RJ is preparing to offer solutions for the small- and medium-sized forwarders to enable them to join the carrier in improving the communication between all stakeholders in the business.

The airline completed the second phase of the upgrade of its Amman cargo terminal, which included semi-automated racking systems and increased capacity for storage and rapid handling of import cargoes. Further sizeable investments in the storage and processing facilities are planned in the near future.

The two Airbus A310 freighters are being operated to Damascus, Tel Aviv, Brussels, London Heathrow, Dubai, Khartoum, Athens, Larnaca, Istanbul, Cairo, Baghdad and Erbil in Iraq.

RJ also carries freight, courier packages and mail in the holds of Royal Jordanian wide-bodied passenger fleet to Cairo, Jeddah, Riyadh, Detroit, Chicago, Delhi, Colombo, Hong-Kong and Bangkok, and in the holds of the airline’s narrow-bodied passenger aircraft to the 43 other destinations the airline serves. The Airbus A310 freighter has a capacity of 35.5 tons.
