Royal Jordanian President & CEO Samer Majali was elected incoming chairman of the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) board of governors during the association's 63rd Annual General Meeting, held June 3-5, 2007 in Vancouver, Canada. Majali will assume the role of chairman of the board of governors, at the 64th general meeting in June 2008 until 2009.
Majali, who has been a member at IATA's board of governors since May 2005, will thereby also become a member of three main committees of the board starting June 2007: The chair, auditand the strategy and policy committees.
President & CEO Samer Majali was elected to this position in appreciation of RJ’s role in the International Air Transport Association, for its reputation in the fields of air safety and passenger services, amongst international air carriers, and for its participation in many international and regional aviation industry activities.
He is the first airline CEO from the Arab world and the region to be elected chairman of IATA's board of governors since former Middle East Airlines CEO Saleem Salam held that position between 1986 and 1987.
IATA will convene its 64th annual general meeting in Istanbul, Turkey next year.
