Emirates focuses on Copenhagen
One of the world’s biggest and most rapidly growing airlines has selected Copenhagen as its gateway to Scandinavia. Emirates opens a daily service from Copenhagen to Dubai today. This means that three out of the four biggest Gulf airlines now have direct services to Denmark.

It was a festive occasion marked by great expectations when Thomas Woldbye, CEO of Copenhagen airport, today welcomed the first Emirates flight from Dubai to Copenhagen.

“The new Emirates service reflects the potential of Copenhagen Airport and the excellent growth opportunities. Emirates is currently one of the world’s biggest airlines. The airline has order as many as 90 Airbus 380s – the world’s biggest passenger airliner. Emirates thinks big and has included Denmark in its plans. We are proud of being part of those plans,” said Woldbye.

Growth rate of 300 percent

Copenhagen Airport has recorded substantial growth in the past year with the three new routes to Dubai, Bahrain and Doha launched by Emirates, Gulf Air and Qatar Airways. There were 915 seats per week to the Gulf States in January 2010, and there will be 3,987 seats from August this year, a growth rate of more than 300 percent.

“Whether we like it or not, Denmark is on the outskirts when we look at a world map. Accessibility is therefore essential for Denmark in the global competition. Each new route to Copenhagen strengthens trade and industry as well as tourism – and creates growth and new jobs. This applies not least when we succeed in attracting intercontinental services such as Emirates to Dubai,” said Thomas Woldbye.

Denmark is country number 67

Richard Vaughan, Senior Vice President for Commercial Operations Worldwide of Emirates welcomes Denmark as country number 67 on the Emirates route network out of Dubai.

“Copenhagen offers Emirates a network of services and new, attractive opportunities. Emirates passengers out of Scandinavia will no longer have to go to Germany to connect to our flights. They can now travel directly from the capital of Denmark to the Far East, India and Australia via our ultra-modern hub in Dubai,” said Vaughan.
