(c) Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation: FKI Logistex has won its largest baggage handling order ever - a USD123 million complete system and USD67 million five-year, full service and maintenance contract - for the New Doha International Airport. This project also represents a first for FKI Logistex in the Middle East, with the new USD7.5 billion Qatar airport expected to become one of the largest in the region.
The new system is due to be operational in September 2009 with final handover in March 2010, with the capacity to sort 19,500 items of luggage each hour, for an estimated 20 million passengers per year.
Constructed in three phases, Qatar Civil Aviation Authority is building the New Doha International Airport in response to projected demand for additional international passenger capacity in the region. The airport is being constructed on a 5,400-acre site near the city of Doha and, when completed, will be approximately two-thirds the size of the city! It involves a massive reclamation project, as over half the area of the airport will be built on land reclaimed from the sea.
