UNITED ARAB EMIRATES :
Etihad Airways will soon begin to host regular Arab Air Carriers Organisation (AACO) training courses at its home base in Abu Dhabi. Initially the new agreement will allow AACO to conduct the Aviation Security (AVSEC) professional management course at the training academy.

Etihad Airways is offering customers in the UAE who book a first or business class seat a second seat for free, as part of a promotion to highlight the airline’s premium services. The ‘two-for-one’ offer is available to customers who book first or business class seats between 12-Feb-09 and 16-Feb-09, inclusive.

Etihad Airways will commence flights to Chicago from 02-Sep-09. The route will be served initially three times a week and will increase to daily flights from 01-Oct-09. Chicago will be the airline's second US destination joining its daily flight to New York.

Etihad Airways signed a new code share agreement with Kuwait Airways on flights between Kuwait and Abu Dhabi. Under the deal, which comes into effect on 01-Feb-09, Etihad Airways will place its two-letter 'EY' code on both of Kuwait Airways' weekly services between Kuwait and Etihad's own home base.

Etihad Airways appointed (29-Jan-09) Linden Coppell, an environmental and corporate social responsibility specialist, as its first manager for environmental affairs. Linden has 18 years experience in environmental affairs and joins Etihad from Cathay Pacific Airways where she held the position of environmental manager for the past five years.

Etihad Airways is set to boost its flying programme to Europe with the addition of its new route to Istanbul in Turkey. Istanbul will initially be served four times a week from 02-Jun-09, expanding to five flights a week from October.

Etihad Airways appointed (24-Jan-09) Nabil Matarweh Hijazine as the airline’s country manager for Iran. Based in the capital city Tehran, Mr Hijazine will be responsible for managing the airline’s commercial operations throughout Iran.

Etihad Airways and Bangkok Airways signed a codeshare agreement. Under the agreement, Etihad Airways will place its two-letter ‘EY’ code on Bangkok Airways’ flights between Bangkok to Phuket and Koh Samui.

Etihad Airways has signed a codeshare agreement with Aer Arann whereby Etihad Airways will place its two-letter ‘EY’ code on Aer Arann’s regional flights from Dublin to Cork and Galway in Ireland and also to the Isle of Man.

The growth during 2008, Etihad’s fifth year of operations, saw passenger numbers total 6,021,931 and the average seat factor rise from 68% to 75%. The airline has also taken delivery of nine new aircraft boosting its fleet to a total of 42.

Rolls-Royce announced (23-Dec-08) that Etihad Airways has chosen the Trent 700EP to power a further eight Airbus A330 aircraft. The A330 aircraft, which will be delivered between 2009 and 2011, will bring Etihad’s Rolls-Royce powered A330 fleet to 24.

Etihad Airways has been awarded rights to start a five times weekly service from its Abu Dhabi home base to Tokyo from Mar-10. The decision follows bilateral talks which took place in Tokyo during the past week between UAE and Japanese government and aviation officials, as well as Etihad Airways representatives.

Etihad Airways will increase its services from Abu Dhabi to Saudi Arabia in December, providing additional flights to Jeddah and Madinah for the annual Hajj Pilgrimage. In addition to its regular daily Jeddah service, Etihad will offer 10 extra flights to the city between 24-Nov-08 and 19-Dec-08.
